The Fundamentals of General Practice Nursing course is a standardized training and education program designed for nurses new to General Practice Nursing.
This accredited, competency-based program specifically prepares recently employed nurses to become confident, competent, and capable practitioners within General Practice. The course aims to help new General Practice Nurses (GPNs) identify their specific learning needs, guiding them toward further opportunities for continued professional development.
The educational objectives of the course are to:

  • Equip GPNs with the theoretical knowledge and practical experience required to fulfil the role as outlined in key NHS documents.
  • Encourage academic and practical development to foster a commitment to lifelong learning.
  • Develop reflective and competent practitioners who utilize an evidence-based approach for effective practice and public protection.

Completion of this one-year course will enable nurses to competently practice as a GPN at a fundamental level of post registration practice. Nurses will be able to choose to undertake the course at a Higher Education Institute (HEI) of their choosing. The course is offered with variable intake dates at: Birmingham City University, Staffordshire University, Wolverhampton University. You must apply to the University as well as completing the Funding Application Form.
